Summary

The data analyzed below in this report are relevant for October 1 – December 31, 2023.

In this analysis, we were interested in discovering the most viral Romanian Facebook content related to a number of state actors and international organizations relevant to Romania: the EU, NATO, the US, Germany, France, the UK, Israel, Russia, China, Ukraine.

CPD extracted data using CrowdTangle, a public insights tool owned and operated by Facebook.

Here are some of the findings:

  • Interest in populist and nationalist narratives, especially concerning sovereignty and national identity, continues to be reflected in these rankings, with high engagement on posts criticizing EU laws for allegedly undermining Romanian sovereignty, and negative portrayal of NATO’s historical leadership.
  • The role of alternative influencers and non-traditional media in shaping discourse on political and geopolitical issues is still significant, driving engagement on controversial topics, but it was less pronounced compared to previous analyzed periods.
  • Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area has garnered attention and engagement on social media, emphasizing its importance in the national and European context.
