The data analyzed below in this report are relevant for April 1 – June 30, 2023.
In this analysis, we were interested in discovering the most viral Romanian Facebook content related to a number of state actors and international organizations relevant for Romania: the EU, NATO, the US, Germany, France, the UK, Israel, Russia, China, Ukraine.
CPD extracted data using CrowdTangle, a public insights tool owned and operated by Facebook.
Here are some of the findings:
- A high-engagement message (14.7k shares, 2.7k comments) posted on a conspiracist, anti-Western page, stating that “America expanded its influence and ruled the world through Hollywood and wars, the last example being the one in Ukraine, where both dimensions are present, since a Hollywood actor rules Ukraine” and alleging that “the war was not provoked by the Russians” was one of the most visible contexts that hosted references to the US, Russia, Ukraine, and China.
- Several high-engagement posts promoted messages such as “Romania is pushed into the war by NATO and the EU”; “EU institutions have abandoned their constituents”; as well as allegations regarding the US’s purported intention to prolong the conflict in Ukraine for economic gain.
